About Eyeonyou - Peter Koneczny Photography. My awareness of photography started very early when, at kindergarten age, I spent time in my grandfather's darkroom observing with anticipation a miracle of images appearing on photographic paper immersed in developer. Everyone who worked in photographic darkroom is familiar with that feeling. It accompanies me even now when I wait for the prints to emerge out from the printer.
The first photographic album that I saw, from my grandfather's library and to which I returned innumerable times, was The Family of Man with photographs from the 1955 New York exhibition organised by Edward Steichen.
At the age of seven I was given a 35mm camera and I have been taking photographs ever since. Photography has become part of my life, part of me, something natural that one simply does in the course if living. Over time I have photographed a variety of subjects both in black and white and colour: people, portrait, landscape, architecture, still life, nature, animals, nude, abstract, macro photography, scientific photography, and objects of art in my professional capacity of a fine art conservator and restorer. For several years I used photography as a painting medium instead of canvas, paints and brushes, and created painting like images.
Nowadays my passion is about people. They are the subjects of most of my photographs. It is like coming full circle back to my first fascination and discovery through photography, back to the family of man.

Technique. My preferred choice is a 35mm SLR rather than a medium format camera. I find the smaller body camera less intrusive and less intimidating to the photographed strangers on the streets. In recent years I have been using digital SLRs. They expand flexibility by allowing one to take handheld photographs in low light and night street photography without using flash.
For processing photographs on the computer I use basic programs, keeping my interference with the images to a minimum. If it is necessary I crop them, alter brightness, contrast and gamma, limiting changes to what I would normally do printing from film in the darkroom.
